The Alabama football, Bear Bryant legend will have a new component next fall when Bryant’s great-grandson, Paul Tyson suits up for the Crimson Tide.
There was never any question where Paul Tyson wanted to play college football. The only question was would he be good enough to become an Alabama football quarterback. Since he was four years old, Paul Tyson has been attending Crimson Tide games.
Paul never met the college football legend who was also his great-grandfather. But he heard his gravelly voice boomed out at every game at Bryant-Denny Stadium. There are, of course, many other Bryant reminders in Tuscaloosa. A major thoroughfare, a museum, and Bryant Hall, plus the perpetual presence of houndstooth.
Paul Tyson soaked it all in for years. As a child, he was showered with affection by adults in the stadium. David Gardner, writing for Bleacher Report described an adult fan’s response to Paul when the Crimson Tide trailed LSU in 2009.
An older man who was seated near the Tysons and who knew the family history bent over and kissed Paul on the top of the head for good luck.
Paul Tyson admitted to being “a little creeped out” by the unusual act. The Crimson Tide came back to win the game. Who knows if there was any connection of luck bringing the Tide fortune? Remember, legions of older Crimson Tide fans were only partly joking when they often claimed Bear Bryant could walk on water.
No one can expect Paul Tyson to live up to such a legacy. He must only become the best player he can be and he is already a pretty good one. He has size, a live arm and poise in the pocket. Like every other Alabama football player, everything he achieves will have to be earned. His great-grandfather would not want it any other way.
