Alabama football kept it in the Tagovailoa family with ‘Baby Tua’ choosing to follow in the large footsteps of his older brother and sign with the Crimson Tide.
Alabama football fans it is not fair to Taulia Tagovailoa to call him ‘Baby Tua.’ We will strive to not do it again. Taulia Tagovailoa already has enough challenge in comparisons to his hugely successful older brother.
Based on past comments made by Tua about his own recruitment, Taulia might have had little choice. It has been reported the Tagovailoa family, following Samoan tradition, follows the decisions of the family elder. If so, Galu Tagovailoa made the college choice for both Tua and Taulia.
What the Alabama Crimson Tide is getting another quarterback equally capable of running or throwing. Taulia has a good arm and escapability much like his older brother. Based on his high school performance at Thompson in Alabaster, Taulia has, again like his brother, a knack for making big plays, often game-winning plays.
Can Taulia ever be as good as Tua? The question is inevitable and it will continue to be asked for at least another year or two. At a shade under six feet, the biggest concern about Taulia is his height. Taulia is as tall as Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson and almost as tall as New Orleans and NFL legend, Drew Brees. He sees himself as a pocket passer but he may need to move around the pocket a bit more than his brother. That slight impediment in his stature will not stop Taulia from playing championship football.
Are the comparisons to Tua a distraction to Taulia? Check out his response to expectations from following Tua to Tuscaloosa.
I want people to expect a lot. I learned from my dad and my brother and I know that I’m prepared. I don’t get tired of hearing about my brother or being compared to him because it’s a blessing that he’s done what he’s done. We’re similar, but I’m my own player. I’m going to be the best me now and when I get there.
Taulia may never have one moment equal to what his brother did in the national championship win over Georgia. He can develop into a great Crimson Tide quarterback nonetheless.
