TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — Alabama freshman Kira Lewis Jr. is having a big year, including 24 points against Wichita State on Nov. 18.
The 17-year-old hasn’t been on campus long, but he’s made his presence felt in a short time — and it’s not just because he’s 6 foot 3 and 167 pounds.
Fans know Lewis can play, but there’s more to him than his stat line. Here are three things to know about Alabama’s point guard.
Lewis is the youngest NCAA Division I basketball player in the country
There’s no Division 1 player younger than Lewis, who was born on April 6, 2001. A few other things born in 2001? iPods, Wikipedia and the first “Harry Potter” film.
Lewis was originally classified as a recruit in the 2019 class, but he was able to earn enough high school credits to enroll at the start of the fall 2018 semester. The decision, made the same day as his commitment to Alabama, meant Lewis had less than two weeks to prepare for his first day of class.
During his year at Hazel Green, Lewis was named the Alabama Class 6A Player of the Year, averaging 29.5 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.5 assists.
Kira Lewis Jr. chose Alabama over 17 other schools
The Crimson Tide weren’t the only school interested in Lewis.
The Meridianville, Alabama, native also received an offer from Auburn, as well as from Kansas, Indiana, Baylor and Xavier. Lewis ultimately had 18 schools to chose from, but he picked Alabama with the knowledge that if he worked hard, he’d get a chance to contribute right away.
Lewis announced his official decision via Twitter on Aug. 10, 2018.
He takes his schoolwork seriously
Just because Lewis skipped a year of high school doesn’t mean he’s not focused on his studies.
He averaged a 3.5 GPA during his three years at Hazel Green High School, ranking near the top 35 of his 360-person class.
At Alabama, he’s majoring in general business, but his sights remain set on a career in the NBA. He said after signing with the Crimson Tide in August that he felt Tuscaloosa would be the best place for him to pursue that dream.
