Schaffer has not seen much game time so far this season, but his impact on the team is far from absent. He is frequently seen on the bench screaming and hyping up his teammates when they make a big play. The crowd feeds off Schaffer’s energy.
Often, you can hear chants of “Lawson! Lawson! Lawson!” coming from the student section. When coach Avery Johnson subs Schaffer into the game, his teammates become just as animated on the bench cheering for him as he does for them. And, when the walk-on makes a shot, the whole gym loses it.
Here are five things you might not know about Schaffer:
When Schaffer is not on the court practicing his 3-point shot, you can find him relaxing with his favorite TV show, “The Office.”
“The Office” aired on NBC from 2005-13.
“Battlestar Galactica.” Basketball.
Schaffer’s dream profession: NBA Player or BMX Rider
Growing up, Schaffer wanted to be a professional basketball player or a professional BMX rider.
At this point in his career, he might be on a better path to becoming an NBA player rather than a BMX rider. Johnson, however, had something else in mind for his player.
“Avery Johnson said he tells @Lawdagger23 that he’ll be a future CEO somewhere one day,” Marq Burnett tweeted in October. “Lawson responds: Well coach, what about an NBA player?
“Johnson: Well son, you’re asking for too much. (smiles)”
Schaffer’s last meal of choice: steak and potatoes
If Schaffer had to pick, he says his last meal would, “most definitely be a ribeye steak with mashed potatoes and asparagus”.
If you find yourself preparing Lawson Shaffer’s meal, you better make sure his steak is just how he likes it: medium rare.
Schaffer’s go-to Karaoke song:
If you ever happen to run into Schaffer at a Karaoke bar he will most likely be singing Lil Wayne and Drake’s “Right Above It.”
It is the song that gets the crowd going, he said. “Everyone knows it and loves it.”
Schaffer’s spirit animal: a lion
If he could be any animal in the world, Schaffer said he would be a Lion.
“Because they are the coolest looking animal, and they are the king of the jungle,” he explained.
At your next Alabama matchup look over to the sideline to see if you can catch Schaffer roaring like a lion.
