There is nothing wrong with planning things in advance, but that decision backfired for a radio station after the Alabama Crimson Tide football team lost the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship game to the Clemson Tigers.
A pre-recorded ad for Academy Sports, which planned to sell Alabama national championship gear if it had beaten Clemson, was heard on WJOX-94.5 in Birmingham. In the ad, a man speaks as if the Crimson Tide had won another title under Nick Saban to cap the 2018 season.
“Coming to you from Academy Sports…many Bama fans coming through getting all of their title apparel,” the man said. “What a great win over Clemson for the Crimson Tide. Six titles in ten years, truly amazing. Title number seven for Nick Saban.”
The erroneous Academy Sports ad can be heard in the video below.
Here is the commercial currently running on @WJOX945 here in Birmingham.
Obviously, it’s a prerecorded advertisement to push #Alabama title gear at local Academy Sports locations across the state but it’s still funny. #NationalChampionship #RollTide pic.twitter.com/ahN1xhGjPv

Clemson beat Alabama 44-16 in the national title game, which marked the fourth consecutive College Football Playoff matchup between the schools. The teams had met in back-to-back title games, splitting them, before Alabama defeated Clemson in one of the playoff semifinal games last season. Clemson exacted revenge behind a solid defensive game plan and three touchdown passes from true freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
“Trevor Lawrence is a special talent,” Saban said after the loss. “I saw him when he was a sophomore, and he was a special player as a sophomore in high school. And he’s playing in a good system, in a good scheme. That’s somewhat similar to what he played in high school.
“And I think that – I got this asked at the press conference the other day, why are more freshmen able to play, especially at quarterback, and I think there’s a greater similarity with the offense that they grow up with and the offense that they play in college. So there’s a lot more similarities. And I think the quarterback position is a little easier now because it’s not all drop-back oriented. RPOs have made it very simple for the quarterback in a lot of ways.
“So not a surprise to me, and I think you’ll see more and more young quarterbacks be able to contribute early on because of those similarities and their training. Their training is better. We have seven-on-sevens all over the country, we’ve got great quarterback coaches that help these guys develop early in their careers, but Trevor has always been a special talent in my mind, and it doesn’t surprise me. He’s got the right stuff as a person, and he’s played phenomenally well for his team this year.”
Despite the lopsided defeat, Saban and the Crimson Tide will likely enter next season near the top of the major polls again. Alabama will be seeking redemption for a national title loss.
Unless the only news you have heard about Monday’s title game came from Academy Sports; then Alabama is chasing back-to-back playoff trophies.
