Amari Cooper records third 1,000-yard season

For the third time in his four NFL seasons, former Alabama All-American Amari Cooper has reached 1,000 receiving yards.

Cooper caught five passes for 31 yards in the Dallas Cowboys’ 36-35 victory over the New York Giants on the final Sunday of the 2018 regular season.

That pushed Cooper’s totals for the season to 75 receptions for 1,005 yards and seven touchdowns.

Cooper caught 72 passes for 1,070 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie for the Oakland Raiders in 2015.

The Raiders selected Cooper with the fourth choice in the 2015 NFL Draft after he earned unanimous All-American recognition, won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s best receiver and set an SEC single-season record with 124 receptions in 2014. Cooper also set Alabama single-season marks that year with 1,727 receiving yards and 16 touchdown receptions.

Cooper entered the NFL as the Crimson Tide’s career record-holder with 228 receptions for 3,463 yards and 31 touchdowns. Cooper’s 31 TD receptions also are tied for the SEC record with Chris Doering, who played at Florida from 1992 through 1995.

In 2016, Cooper caught 83 passes for 1,153 yards and five touchdowns as he became the third player in NFL history with at least 70 receptions and 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first two seasons.

Last season, Cooper’s production dropped to 48 receptions for 680 yards and seven touchdowns, and he missed two games with injuries.

Six games into the 2018 season, Cooper had 22 receptions for 280 yards and one touchdown for Oakland when the Raiders traded him to the Cowboys on Oct. 22 in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

In eight games with Dallas, Cooper caught 53 passes for 725 yards and six touchdowns.

Cooper became the second Alabama alumnus and the third player with state football roots to reach 1,000 receiving yards in the NFL this season, joining former Foley High School and Alabama standout Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons and former West Alabama standout Tyreek Hill of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jones closed his season with nine receptions for 138 yards and one touchdown in the Falcons’ 34-32 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Jones totaled 113 receptions for 1,677 yards and eight touchdowns in 2018. He will finish as the leader in receiving yards in the NFC for the fifth straight season and in the NFL for the second time in his career.

Hill entered the Chiefs’ Saturday afternoon game against the Oakland Raiders with 82 receptions for 1,378 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Cooper recorded the 37th 1,000-yard season by a player from an Alabama high school or college and the 12th for a Crimson Tide alumnus.
