FIRST HALF

— Murray State’s Ja Morant scores back-to-back buckets to open the game. He’s why there are 34 NBA scouts at Coleman Coliseum.

— At the first media timeout, it’s Murray State 9, Alabama 4 (15:24).

— Murray State 13, Alabama 12 (11:43, 1H) — Alex Reese and Ja Morant lead their teams with 6 points each. Reese is 2-of-3 on threes.

— Layup by Ja Morant briefly gives Murray State a 1-point lead, but a bucket by Kira Lewis on the other end puts Alabama back in front, 45-44 (14:36, 2H). 

— Alabama 49, Murray State 48 (11:45, 2H) — The Racers have hit 5 of their last 7 shots from the field. 

— Kira Lewis drains a triple, giving him 14 points, to push Alabama’s lead to 58-52 (8:16, 2H). 

— Alabama 65, Murray State 59 (3:51, 2H) — Kira Lewis has a team-high 16 points. Ja Morant has a game-high 26 points for the Racers. 

— Ja Morant has 38 of Murray State’s 72 points. He’s pretty good.

POSTGAME

— Murray State’s Ja Morant, who had 38 points, asked if this Alabama team had the toughest defense he’s faced in his career: “I think so, just because of their length and athleticism.” 

— Ja Morant on Alabama’s crowd cheering for him after his final dunk of the game: “I appreciate the fans for that. I was just really hoping that we could have come out with a win.” 

— John Petty on Ja Morant: “Nine times out of 10, you see guys on film and when they come in the building, they’re not the same. He’s exactly what we saw on film — a great player.” 

— John Petty on next facing UCF: “We’re going to go down to Florida and try to get some payback.”

— Avery Johnson on Kira Lewis: “He’s doing good. He’s learning every day, growing. He just loves the cafeteria, he loves to eat. He’s early to all his classes. … He’s just got to continue to grow and develop.” 

— Avery Johnson on Donta Hall’s struggles: “He’s just got to get better, got to keep getting stronger and finish inside. And we’ve got to get him the ball a little more.” 

— Avery Johnson: “My focus right now tonight, probably about 12:30 in the morning when everybody’s sleeping in my house — including my little dog that’s four pounds — I’ll have my coffee pot out and I’ll watch our game and break it down.” Then comes prep for UCF tomorrow.
