“We’re not done yet,” the mantra of Alabama football as championship season gets under way, echoed from down the hall. Nick Saban’s deep voice it was not. One of the Nerds was standing and chanting in the doorway of the Almost Perfect Picks Department break room, across the hall from the war room where – in the words of the Geek Gang – the magic gets done.
The Nerd (if we ever knew his name, it escapes us) did not appear to be speaking to anyone. When he realized he was being watched he ducked into the break room. We saw another small head peek out to see us at our station where — as we say — the work gets done.
Eventually, the Grand Geek made his way out and down the hall towards us. He was munching a Little Debbie.
“Anyone could have predicted that,” he began. “How much money do you suppose it takes to have a committee to choose the teams for the College Football Playoff? A million or two?”
We agreed it was quite a bit.
He continued, “After the conference championship games it could have been only Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma. And then we could have predicted that Urban was probably done…and that Kirby may not be far behind.”
Things seemed to be wandering off point as we waited for him to get to his gang’s results.
“We have come to a reluctant conclusion,” the Geek continued. “Although we missed the part of our prediction about the points spread on the Alabama-Georgia game, any disappointment was erased by the happy heroics of Jalen Hurts. Who could have predicted Tua would be injured and Alabama would still win the SEC Championship game?”
Last week the Almost Perfect Picks Department predicted not only the Southeastern Conference Championship Game win by Alabama, but also South Carolina’s win over Akron in a decidedly lackluster contest.
“Did they even play the second half?” the Grand Geek asked? “It was 28-3 at halftime and that’s what it ended up.”
For the next few weeks the boys will be working on a bowl schedule, predicting SEC games in everything from Alabama’s appearance in the Orange Bowl semifinals of the College Football Playoff on Dec. 29 through the other 10 bowl games with SEC participants. Those bowls will be played Dec. 27-Jan. 1.
In the past, they have also predicted the other CFP semifinal, this year Clemson vs. Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl.
For the year, the Nerds in the Geek Gang are 99-14 in predicting the winning team, 58-42 against the betting line, and 50-46 on the over-under (total points by both teams).
Here are last Saturday’s SEC picks and results with point spreads and over-under numbers provided by the local newspaper:
Akron (4-7) at South Carolina (6-5 overall, 4-4 SEC). South Carolina favored by 28 1/2 points, over-under 56. PREDICTION: South Carolina 42, Akron 10. ACTUAL: South Carolina 28, Akron 3. Right on winner, missed against the line, right on o-u.
Alabama (12-0, 8-0) vs. Georgia (11-1, 7-1). Alabama favored by 13, over-under 63 1/2. PREDICTION: Alabama 38, Georgia 17. ACTUAL: Alabama 35, Georgia 28. Correct on winner, wrong against the spread, correct on o-u.
