BATON ROUGE, La. — Top-ranked Alabama just finished up pregame warmups before its Week 10 road game against the No. 3 LSU Tigers at Tiger Stadium. Here are a few observations from the Crimson Tide’s pregame drills ahead of its second top-25 matchup of the 2018 season.
— Wide receiver DeVonta Smith (hamstring) made the trip to Baton Rouge, which wasn’t the case two weeks ago at Tennessee. The sophomore wideout dressed out and warmed up, but we did not see much from him during team drills. We did, however, see Jerry Jeudy in the slot and Jaylen Waddle split out wide.
On Thursday, Alabama head coach Nick Saban said he was hoping Smith would be “very close to 100 percent by game time.”
— Quarterback Jalen Hurts (ankle) arrived at the stadium with a walking boot on his right foot but still seemed to be limited in his movements. It appears he will not play with his ankle injury. Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones and tight end Miller Forristall took snaps from center in pregame, and Jones, a redshirt freshman, saw reps with the second-team offense before drills ended.

Nick Saban on Thursday: “Jalen was able to practice a little bit today, but he’s limited a little bit still. But he’s getting well very rapidly now. He’s kind of turned the corner a little bit.”

— Redshirt sophomore Deonte Brown warmed up with the first-team offensive line at left guard for the second week in a row. Senior Lester Cotton was again with the second unit. Richie Petitbon started warmups as the third center, as freshman Emil Ekiyor did not travel. Petitbon lined up at right tackle with the twos in team drills before the team went to the locker room.
— Preferred walk-on Mike Bernier was the only punter to make the trip to Baton Rouge.
“Both guys have really improved,” Saban said of both Alabama’s punters. “Skyler (DeLong) has improved, Mike has improved. Both guys have improved. Hopefully, that will carry over into the game and we can improve our consistency in that area to some degree.”
— Like we saw in practice, Chadarius Townsend warmed up with the defensive backs.
— Alabama’s Game 9 captains are Anfernee Jennings, Christian Miller and Jonah Williams.
— NFL scouts credentialed for Alabama-LSU are from the New Orleans Saints (2), Buffalo Bills (2), Arizona Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts (2), Los Angeles Rams, Miami Dolphins, Seattle Seahawks (2) and Philadelphia Eagles.
